20 Under 40 Class of 2024: Savannah Weaver
In Elmore, Alabama in April of 2007, an enthusiastic young girl signed up for a Young Eagles flight and climbed into the waiting V-tail Bonanza. She was ecstatic to be in the front seat, and when the pilot handed her the flight controls, she instantly knew she belonged in the sky.
Savannah’s private certificate came in April 2010, and two weeks later she was giving Young Eagles rides at the same Elmore, Alabama event. Now a CFI-Instrument, multi-engine commercial pilot, she prefers flying taildraggers, including the T-6, Maule, Cubs, and her Cessna 170B. Adding to her aviation knowledge, Savannah is also an Airframe and Powerplant mechanic with Inspection Authorization. Subsequently, she restored her Cessna 170B after purchasing it as a languishing, disassembled project.
Savannah was introduced to warbirds in 2015 when she traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to complete her CFI training. While there, she flew with Dr. Morris Ray as he demonstrated formation and aerobatics in his T-6, leaving an indelible impression. Savannah left dreaming of learning to fly the T-6, and the opportunity came in 2022 when she became acquainted with the CAF WASP T-6, Nella. Savannah’s enthusiasm has only grown as she now flies Nella on tour, inspiring young and old as she talks about the women pilots of WWII – the WASPs.
Formation flying, with its beauty and precision, has become one of her passions. With the FAST “wingman” formation rating in her pocket she participates in formation events, flies several NATA formation clinics each year, and is working on her “lead” card.
Savannah received her Mechanical Engineering degree from Auburn University in 2017 and is employed by Pratt and Whitney as a Static Structures Engineer for commercial engines, tying together the jet age with her knowledge of the golden age of piston engines.
